Starting in Hualien, we will drive roughly 30 minutes south towards the Truku land. The day starts with a man made waterfall, where we’ll find locals relaxing and barbecuing, however we will continue up, to a natural, gorgeous waterfall.
The trace is not too difficult, with the options to either climb through the rushing river, climb the mini waterfalls, or simply walk along the path when tired. Before reaching the waterfall, we will come to a spectacularly blue swimming hole, perfect for lunch and relaxation before continuing.

Zhuilu Old Trail
We will take a journey back through the monumental walls of Taroko Gorge, along the Liwu river until we reach Swallows Grotto. Here the trail begins over a long suspension bridge towards Zhuilu Old Trail. The trail winds up the mountain, over gaps and suspension bridges, until we reach the old “cross mountain highway”of Taroko. The narrow cliffside of Zhuilu Old trail was used by aboriginal tribes to reach the western side of the Gorge, near Hehuanshan Mountains, until the Japanese invaded and used the same trail to attack and take over the local tribes. It was then turned into a Japanese tourist attraction. Now it is a wonderfully exciting hike, with a required good head for heights, that offers the most spectacular views from within the Gorge.
When we return from our hike, we will transfer to Xincheng station, to say our goodbyes. Option to return to Taipei, stay in Hualien, or continue south.
