Begin from the east coast of Taiwan, in the quaint farm county of Hualien. From the train station we will rent scooters and take a cruise along the mountainside for 30 minutes until we reach Taroko National Park.
We will take a journey with our scooters through the monumental walls of Taroko Gorge, along the Liwu river until we reach Swallows Grotto. Here the trail begins over a long suspension bridge towards Zhuilu Old Trail. The trail winds up the mountain, over gaps and suspension bridges, until we reach the old “cross mountain highway”of Taroko. The narrow cliffside of Zhuilu Old trail was used by aboriginal tribes to reach the western side of the Gorge, near Hehuanshan Mountains, until the Japanese invaded and used the same trail to attack and take over the local tribes. It was then turned into a Japanese tourist attraction. Now it is a wonderfully exciting hike, with a required good head for heights, that offers the most spectacular views from within the Gorge.
When the sun gets low, we will make our way back to Hualien city and rest at our accommodation before having dinner in town.
Wake up for breakfast around 8 a.m. After preparing for the day we will drive back into the Gorge to get wet! Taroko and the surrounding areas are home beautifully clear blue river systems, hot springs, and waterfalls.
We will spend a few hours relaxing and adventuring through Taroko Gorge’s rivers and streams, encompassed by the jungle gorge and its beauty before heading back towards Hualien. On the return from the river we will stop at a few scenic areas, such as Swallows Grotto and the Eternal Springs Shrine.
Train back to Taipei in the evening, or continue on your adventures through the East Coast!
